fear_by_wowzmelissa

It’s time for a little ‘inside baseball’ .  I have to face a fear I have about this blog and the writing project (as i’ve started to refer to the book).

My fear is all about timing.   Like all fears that people have it’s because I’ve been burned in the past and i’m hesitant to be burned again.   One of the earliest business projects I’ve started was a started cruise business, well a cruise oriented travel agency.  Simply stated I had been selling lots of techie products with no motivation on my part other than commissions.  I went on a cruise and was so enthralled with the experience that I naively thought I could easily sell it.  Unfortunately the decision was bad timing on my part.  I was starting my travel agency just as we were seeing the ascendency of travelocity and web. In hindsight I should have realized my timing was horrible because in fact cruise i went on was found via yahoo travel even though I purchased it from a local travel agency.  Like many others I simply didn’t see the takeover happening as quick as it did.. although ironically the people who offer small business loans did, but that’s a post for another day.

This blog/book/business thing I’m working on is predicated on trying to be apart of the wave of direct to consumer media (Youtube, Amazon, Vimio, iTunes, STEAM, etc..).   But i’m trying to learn as much as I can about the business and i’m seeing lots of warning signs.  Organizations like Amazon are getting very very good at squeezing the  ‘little guys’ – in this case content creators.  Other organizations are growing and fulfilling the curating roles.  Many people are getting involved so the number you have to compete against for attention is growing and growing.  (look up articles on challenges on how to get noticed on STEAM to see what I mean about this).

On the positive side all I have to loose is time because it doesn’t cost anything to write a book or a blog (editing and publishing, is another thing entirely).

I’m going to continue this blog for at least a year.. and hopefully I’ll get back to writing the book this fall.  – I foolishly thought I’d be able to start researching / writing the book again within a few weeks of moving into the new house.  (I guess I’m still naive)
