One of my earliest jobs was selling Outside Plant (OSP) equipment to telephone -and later internet- companies. Outside plant is all of the equipment from the communications company building to the end point, so it includes cables, metal boxes – usually painted green, spice cases, marker boxes, etc – When I first started selling Outside plant telecom equipment something strange happened. I started seeing telecom equipment everywhere.
And When I say everywhere I mean literally everywhere and that’s because it is everywhere. OSP equipment is on every road, every house, in every town and all over the country. We don’t see it because it’s always there and we don’t pay it any mind in our comings and goings. We have trained ourselves to focus on our goals, not the boring green box on the corner. Just by looking around, paying attention I learned about what I was selling because I could see how it’s being used.
Over the years i’ve had similar experiences with vehicles i’ve purchased or wanted to purchase,
Now i’ve decided to try my hand at writing unsurprisingly i’m seeing resources and authors everywhere. The first thought is wow, I have a ton of resources available to me. The second thought is wow, now I have to figure out how to stand out from the crowd. How to not become that green box on the side of the road that fifty thousand people pass every day and nobody notices.
Maybe if I paint my box purple.
