focus

A respected friend (whom I believe is a Professional Individual Contributor)  recently gave me a link to his music on soundcloud.  To my ears the first two songs were 80’s inspired.. which kinds of makes sense consider we are both children of the 80’s.   I listened intently again and again..

I had innumerable questions.. why did you choose this rif.. what was your intent with this lyric, what did you use to record the thing?  which parts of what songs do you think have the most potential…  Then I realized.. I have a house to get in order, I have kids that need attention, I have a job and I really need to hop on my work email and update that presentation for Tuesday.  I want to call my friend, I want to talk about all of this, I want to focus on the joy of discovery in an art form that I love.. but I can’t. I really don’t have the time.

Maintaining focus on the things we love is difficult as life progresses and there are more and more demands on our time.  I guess my friend came very close to expressing the sentiment in this post with his lyric “Clock is tickin’, I don’t know, nothing on the DVR” and I think for me, and for any PIC the lyric should be “Clock is tickin’, I don’t know.. I don’t have time to check the DVR
